حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَوْدُودٍ، عَمَّنْ سَمِعَ أَبَانَ بْنَ عُثْمَانَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ — يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَفَّانَ — يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «مَنْ قَالَ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ، ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، لَمْ تُصِبْهُ فَجْأَةُ بَلَاءٍ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ، وَمَنْ قَالَهَا حِينَ يُصْبِحُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ لَمْ تُصِبْهُ فَجْأَةُ بَلَاءٍ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ». قَالَ: فَأَصَابَ أَبَانَ بْنَ عُثْمَانَ الْفَالِجُ، فَجَعَلَ الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي سَمِعَ مِنْهُ الْحَدِيثَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: مَا لَكَ تَنْظُرُ إِلَيَّ؟ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا كَذَبْتُ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ وَلَا كَذَبَ عُثْمَانُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَلَكِنَّ الْيَوْمَ الَّذِي أَصَابَنِي فِيهِ مَا أَصَابَنِي غَضِبْتُ فَنَسِيتُ أَنْ أَقُولَهَا.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever says: ‘In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing’ three times, no sudden affliction will strike him until morning; and whoever says it in the morning three times, no sudden affliction will strike him until evening.”

Notes
The report ends with a striking account: Aban ibn ‘Uthman was later struck by partial paralysis. When the man who had heard the hadith from him stared at him, Aban said he had not lied about ‘Uthman — only that on that day he had been angry and forgot to say it.
