حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي السَّفَرِ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ قَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَحْيَا وَبِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ». وَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ قَالَ: «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ».
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) lay down he would say: “O Allah, in Your name I live and in Your name I die.” When he woke he would say: “All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection.”

Notes
Hisnul Muslim chapter 1, dua 1, takes the waking wording from this hadith. Al-‘Asqalani in Fath al-Bari 11/113 treats it as gratitude for life restored after sleep, which resembles death.
