The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever glorifies Allah a hundred times in the morning and a hundred times in the evening is like one who has performed a hundred pilgrimages. Whoever praises Allah a hundred times morning and evening is like one who has equipped a hundred horses in the path of Allah. Whoever declares Allah’s oneness a hundred times morning and evening is like one who has freed a hundred slaves from the descendants of Isma‘il. And whoever magnifies Allah a hundred times morning and evening — no one on that day comes with more than he has come with, except one who says the like of it or more.”
Grade
Hasan gharib
Imam al-Tirmidhi
Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi 3471
Da‘if al-Jami‘ al-Saghir no. 5619
He placed this report in his collection of weak reports.
Cited as hasan per al-Tirmidhi
Sheikh Redwan Muhammad Redwan
Himpunan Risalah, footnote no. 113
He attributes it to al-Tirmidhi (hasan) and al-Nasa’i, and also mentions the report of Umm Hani’ (r.a.) from al-Tabarani.
Acting on a weak report in fada’il al-a‘mal
Imam al-Nawawi writes in al-Adhkar: “The scholars among the hadith specialists, the jurists and others have said: it is permitted and encouraged to act, in matters of merit and of encouragement and warning, upon a weak hadith — so long as it is not fabricated (mawdu‘).” As for rulings such as the lawful and unlawful, sale, marriage and divorce, these may rest only on a sahih or hasan report.
The conditions Ibn ‘Allan states in al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyya (1/84): (1) the report is neither fabricated nor severely weak; (2) it falls under an established general principle; and (3) when acting on it one does not hold it to be established from the Prophet (peace be upon him), but acts out of precaution.
Al-Adhkar, al-Nawawi — section on acting upon a weak hadith
Notes
The grade is disputed: al-Tirmidhi himself rated it hasan gharib (no. 3471), while al-Albani placed it in Da‘if al-Jami‘ (no. 5619).
The report of Umm Hani’ (r.a.) that Sheikh Redwan also mentions (via al-Tabarani) has not been checked by Qawiy.
